The best field watches by budget, under £200 / $200 to £1,000 / $1,000, with sizes, movements and prices from the makers' own sites and one caveat each.
The best field watches by budget, from under £200 / $200 to £1,000 / $1,000
Thirteen field watches in three budgets, with sizes, movements and prices read from the makers' own pages on 24 October 2026, one caveat each and the figures a maker does not publish marked as such.
The best field watches depend on your budget and your wrist, so this guide groups thirteen of them, twelve available from the makers' own sites on 24 October 2026 and one coming soon, into three budgets. Each has sizes, a movement, a price in the maker's currency and one caveat.
One of them is ours: the Vannin Field Watch is coming soon, so it is listed last in its tier and described in the same format as the rest.
We have not tested these watches, and every figure comes from the maker's published specification. If you need the basics first, start with what a field watch is.
Best field watches at a glance
There are four watches under £200 / $200, six under £500 / $500, our Field Watch among them, and three under £1,000 / $1,000. Table 1 gives the price, size, movement and water resistance of all thirteen.
We place each watch by the lower of its two headline prices where a maker shows both, because in this guide the pound price is lower than the dollar price wherever both are listed. Two straddle a line: the Timex Field Post Solar is £160 but $209, and the Marathon GPM is £450 but $525.
Prices are as listed on each maker's own site on 24 October 2026, in that site's currency, and nothing is converted. Four of the thirteen list dollars only, two list pounds only and seven list both.

How we chose these field watches
We included watches that their maker names or lists as a field or military-inspired watch, or that clearly follow the field-watch pattern, that were on the maker's own site with a price and no sold-out or pre-order label, and whose specifications are published. The Vannin Field Watch is the one disclosed exception, because it is coming soon.
Named or listed by its maker as a field watch, part of a field or military-inspired range, or clearly following the field-watch pattern. On the maker's own site on 24 October 2026 with a price in pounds or dollars and no sold-out or pre-order label. Specifications read from the maker's own page, with "not published" where it gives no figure. Spread across three budgets, alphabetical by brand within each, with no ranking. Vannin included as a disclosed exception.
Good field watches turn up at every price, which is why the list is split by budget and not ranked. We did not weigh social following, hype, resale value or how any watch wears, because we have not tested them.
We do not label any of these as men's or women's, so whoever searches for the best field watches for men, or for anyone else, finds the same numbers here, in millimetres. Watches that were sold out, on pre-order, priced only in euros or above £1,000 / $1,000 on the day we looked are not listed, and that can change.
For what makes a field watch in the first place, read our guide to what a field watch is.
Best field watches under £200 / $200
For cheap field watches, the best field watches under 200 in this guide are, in alphabetical order and not ranked, Bertucci ($145), the Timex Field Post Solar (£160, or $209 in dollars, just over the line), the Timex Scout (£70 / $95) and Vaer ($189, dollars only). None is mechanical: Bertucci lists a battery, and Timex and Vaer name quartz. Bertucci and the Timex Scout have a mineral crystal while Timex Solar and Vaer have sapphire, so crystal does not simply rise with price. For more on the difference, see sapphire crystal vs mineral glass.
Bertucci A-2S Field
Price: $145 (ultimatefieldwatch.com, dollars as the maker lists them) Diameter: 40 mm Lug-to-lug: not published Thickness: not published Lug width: not published Movement: Battery-powered, 4-year battery as listed Crystal: R-Type mineral Water resistance: 100 m
Good for: A low-priced steel field watch in a 40 mm case on a nylon band, which Bertucci calls its quintessential field watch.
Worth knowing: The page text publishes no lug-to-lug, thickness or lug width, and the crystal is mineral.
Read the maker's own page: Bertucci's store page. Bertucci's store lists dollars only, so the price here is in dollars as the maker lists them and we show no pound price. A drawing on the page carries figures without labels, which we have not used.
Timex Expedition Field Post Solar 36mm
Price: £160 (timex.co.uk) / $209 (timex.com) Diameter: 36 mm Lug-to-lug: not published Thickness: 12 mm Lug width: 18 mm (listed as band / lug width) Movement: Solar-powered quartz Crystal: Sapphire Water resistance: 100 m
Good for: Readers who want a 36 mm case, which Timex describes as suited to smaller wrists, and a solar-powered quartz with a power reserve of up to four months, as Timex states it.
Worth knowing: It is 12 mm thick for a 36 mm case and Timex does not publish lug-to-lug, so check the fit numbers.
Read the maker's own pages: Timex UK page and Timex US page. At £160 it sits under the £200 line in pounds, while the $209 US price is just over the $200 line.
Timex Expedition Scout 40mm
Price: £70 (timex.co.uk) / $95 (timex.com) Diameter: 40 mm Lug-to-lug: not published Thickness: 11 mm Lug width: 20 mm (listed as band / lug width) Movement: Quartz, CR2016 battery Crystal: Mineral Water resistance: 50 m
Good for: A 40 mm quartz with a 12-hour or 24-hour setting, which Timex describes as an update to its classic field watch.
Worth knowing: It is rated 50 m, against 100 m or more for most watches here, and Timex does not publish lug-to-lug.
Read the maker's own pages: Timex UK page and Timex US page. The UK page is the TW4B14200 colourway at £70 and the US page is the TW4B14100 colourway at $95. Timex adds an Indiglo light-up dial.
Vaer S3 Calendar Field
Price: $189 (vaerwatches.com, US dollars as listed) Diameter: 36 mm Lug-to-lug: 43 mm Thickness: 8.4 mm Lug width: 20 mm Movement: Quartz, GM12, battery powered Crystal: Flat sapphire Water resistance: 10 ATM (100 m)
Good for: A 36 mm quartz, 8.4 mm thick, with a sapphire crystal. Vaer calls it a field watch inspired by the A-11 watches worn by American soldiers in the Second World War.
Worth knowing: Vaer lists the crystal as flat rather than domed, and the listed price can change.
Read the maker's own page: Vaer's page. Vaer's page showed US dollars only, so we show no pound price.
Best field watches under £500 / $500
Everything in the section above also fits under £500 / $500; these six sit between about £200 / $200 and £500 / $500. Two are battery or light powered (Citizen and CWC), three are automatic (Marathon, Seiko and Timex) and Vannin is an automatic that is coming soon. The Marathon GPM is £450 in pounds but $525 in dollars. Citizen's price is its original price, because its page shows a time-limited promotion. For automatics only, see our guide to the best automatic watches under £500 (and $500).
Citizen Garrison BM8180-03E
Price: $295 (citizenwatch.com/us, original price) Diameter: 37 mm (listed as case width) Lug-to-lug: not published Thickness: not published Lug width: 18 mm Movement: Eco-Drive (light-powered) Crystal: Mineral Water resistance: 100 m (WR100, 10 bar)
Good for: A light-powered watch in a 37 mm steel case that Citizen calls military-inspired, on a nylon strap.
Worth knowing: Citizen does not publish lug-to-lug or thickness, and the crystal is mineral.
Read the maker's own page: Citizen's US page. Citizen's page also shows a time-limited promotion, so the price here is the original price it lists. Citizen describes it as military-inspired, and its page does not call it a field watch.
CWC British Military G10
Price: £299 (cwcwatch.com) Diameter: 38 mm (including crown; 36.5 mm without) Lug-to-lug: not published Thickness: not published Lug width: not published Movement: ETA F06.402 quartz Crystal: Hesalite acrylic Water resistance: 5 ATM
Good for: Readers interested in the military-issue history CWC describes, in a compact quartz case. CWC says it was developed in 1980 as the General Service Wrist Watch for British forces.
Worth knowing: The crystal is acrylic and the rating is 5 ATM, and CWC does not publish lug-to-lug, thickness or lug width.
Read the maker's own page: CWC's page. CWC supplies an 18 mm strap and lists a battery life of 3 to 4 years. Only the standard version, with a white seconds hand, can be bought today; its blue, orange and red options show as unavailable. CWC gives its address as Mile End, London.
Marathon General Purpose Mechanical (GPM) 34mm
Price: £450 (uk.marathonwatch.com, Ballistic Nylon strap) / $525 (marathonwatch.com, Ballistic Nylon strap) Diameter: 34 mm Lug-to-lug: 41 mm Thickness: 12.5 mm Lug width: 16 mm Movement: Seiko NH35A automatic, can also be hand-wound Crystal: Sapphire Water resistance: 3 ATM
Good for: Readers who want a 34 mm case with a 41 mm lug-to-lug, from a maker that says the watch is built to a US military specification, MIL-PRF-46374G.
Worth knowing: The rating is 3 ATM, and the 16 mm lug width is narrower than the 18 and 20 mm widths published elsewhere in this guide.
Read the maker's own pages: Marathon UK page and Marathon US page. Both prices are for the Ballistic Nylon strap; Marathon charges more for its other nylon option. At £450 it sits under the £500 line in pounds, while the $525 US price is over the $500 line. The military wording is Marathon's, not ours.
Seiko 5 Sports SRPG41
Price: £320 (seikowatches.com UK page) / $350 (seikousa.com) Diameter: 39.4 mm Lug-to-lug: 48.1 mm Thickness: 13.2 mm Lug width: 20 mm Movement: 4R36 automatic with manual winding, about 41 h reserve Crystal: Curved Hardlex Water resistance: 10 bar (100 m)
Good for: A 39.4 mm automatic that Seiko lists with manual winding capability, from its 5 Sports Field series.
Worth knowing: It is 13.2 mm thick, and the crystal is Hardlex, Seiko's own name, rather than sapphire.
Read the maker's own pages: Seiko UK page and Seiko US store. Seiko's UK page lists the pound price and its US store the dollar price.
Timex Expedition Field Post Titanium Automatic 41mm
Price: £355 (timex.co.uk) / $429 (timex.com) Diameter: 41 mm Lug-to-lug: 50 mm Thickness: 13.5 mm Lug width: 20 mm (listed as band / lug width) Movement: Miyota 8215 automatic, hacking seconds Crystal: Sapphire Water resistance: 200 m
Good for: An automatic with a 200 m rating and a black IP-coated titanium case, from Timex's Expedition Field Post range.
Worth knowing: Check its 50 mm lug-to-lug and 13.5 mm thickness against your wrist before you choose it.
Read the maker's own pages: Timex UK page and Timex US page. Timex lists the pound price on its UK site and the dollar price on its US site.
Vannin Field Watch (coming soon)
Price: £399 (vanninwatches.com) Diameter: 38.0 mm Lug-to-lug: 46.0 mm Thickness: 11.2 mm (including crystal) Lug width: 20.0 mm Movement: Miyota 9039 automatic, hacking seconds, hand winding, 42 h reserve Crystal: Double-domed sapphire Water resistance: 100 m / 10 ATM
Good for: Readers who want a 38 mm case with a 46 mm lug-to-lug, a 20 mm lug width and a Miyota 9039 automatic.
Worth knowing: It is not available yet, visitors can only register their interest, and there are no owner reviews.
Read about the Vannin Field Watch collection, which comes in four colourways: Irish Sea Blue, Mountain Green, Western Sky Orange and Manannán's Cloak Grey. The movement is the Miyota 9039.
Best field watches under £1,000 / $1,000
Everything above also fits under £1,000 / $1,000; these three sit between about £500 / $500 and £1,000 / $1,000. The Marathon GPM is £450 in pounds but $525 in dollars, so US readers can read it as sitting in this band too. Nodus lists dollars only. Two of the three are automatic (Hamilton Khaki Field Auto and Nodus) and one is hand-wound (Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical).
Hamilton Khaki Field Auto 38mm
Price: £640 (hamiltonwatch.com UK) / $795 (hamiltonwatch.com US) Diameter: 38 mm Lug-to-lug: 47 mm Thickness: 11 mm Lug width: 20 mm Movement: H-10 automatic, 80 h reserve Crystal: Sapphire Water resistance: 10 bar (100 m)
Good for: A 38 mm automatic with an 80-hour power reserve, a sapphire crystal and a 100 m rating, from Hamilton's Khaki Field range.
Worth knowing: It is 11 mm thick, against 9.5 mm for Hamilton's hand-wound Khaki Field Mechanical in the same 38 mm size, so check the stack height.
Read the maker's own pages: Hamilton UK page and Hamilton US page. Hamilton's page does not mention hand winding for the H-10.
Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 38mm
Price: £545 (hamiltonwatch.com UK) / $675 (hamiltonwatch.com US) Diameter: 38 mm Lug-to-lug: 47 mm Thickness: 9.5 mm Lug width: 20 mm Movement: H-50 hand-wound, 80 h reserve Crystal: Sapphire Water resistance: 5 bar (50 m)
Good for: A 9.5 mm-thick hand-wound field watch with an 80-hour power reserve and a NATO-style textile strap.
Worth knowing: It is hand-wound only, and the rating is 5 bar (50 m), against 100 m or more for nine of the other twelve watches here.
Read the maker's own pages: Hamilton UK page and Hamilton US page. Hamilton lists a Nivachron balance spring.
Nodus Sector II Field Titanium
Price: $600 to $625 (noduswatches.com, US dollars) Diameter: 38 mm (listed as case width) Lug-to-lug: 47 mm Thickness: 11.7 mm Lug width: 20 mm Movement: NH38 automatic, 41 h reserve Crystal: Box sapphire Water resistance: 100 m
Good for: A 38 mm titanium-cased automatic with a box sapphire crystal and a 100 m rating. Nodus says it is inspired by the rugged watches soldiers wore.
Worth knowing: Nodus's page lists US dollars only, and some colourways show as sold out, so the one you want may not be available.
Read the maker's own page: Nodus's page. Canopy, Dusk and FDE are listed at $600 and Sequoia at $625.
Field watch sizes compared
Diameters run from 34 mm to 41 mm and published lug-to-lug from 41 mm to 50 mm, and for many wearers lug-to-lug decides fit more than diameter does; eight of the thirteen entries publish it. Our watch size guide shows how to measure your wrist, and lug-to-lug and lug width explains both measurements.
Among the eight that publish both numbers, lug-to-lug is 7.0 to 9.0 mm longer than the diameter (our arithmetic). The five that do not publish it are Bertucci, Citizen, CWC, the Timex Scout and the Timex Solar, and we do not estimate it from the diameter.
No size suits everyone, so compare these numbers with your own wrist and with watches you already wear.

How to choose between these field watches
Start with fit, then movement, then crystal and water resistance, and only then let the budget break ties. Fit comes first: diameters here run from 34 mm to 41 mm, the eight watches that publish lug-to-lug run from 41 mm to 50 mm, and lug widths, where published, are 16, 18 or 20 mm. Thickness runs from 8.4 mm to 13.5 mm among the ten that publish it. Use our watch size guide and the notes on lug-to-lug and lug width.
Movement: six of the thirteen have no winding because they run on a battery, on solar power or, for Citizen, on light. Six are automatic and one, Hamilton's Khaki Field Mechanical, is hand-wound only. A self-winding watch needs wearing or winding, and a battery watch needs a new battery at the interval its maker gives. Our guide to automatic vs quartz watches covers both without accuracy claims.
Crystal: eight of the thirteen list sapphire and five do not. Bertucci, the Timex Scout and Citizen list mineral, CWC lists acrylic and Seiko lists its own Hardlex. Sapphire appears at £160, $189 and $209, while Hardlex appears at £320 and $350, so price alone does not predict the crystal.
Water resistance: ratings run from 3 ATM to 200 m. A rating is a rating, not a depth, and makers word their advice differently, so read what 100 m (10 bar) water resistance really means before you rely on one.
Strap: eight of the thirteen list a 20 mm lug width. Citizen and the Timex Solar list 18 mm, Marathon lists 16 mm, and Bertucci and CWC publish none, so check before you buy a spare strap.
Then let the budget decide between the watches that fit. For what defines the style, read what a field watch is.
Field watch FAQs
What is the best field watch? There is no single best field watch; it depends on wrist size and budget, and we have not tested any of these watches. Choose a budget first, then check lug-to-lug, which eight of the thirteen entries publish. Diameters in this guide run from 34 mm to 41 mm and published lug-to-lug from 41 mm to 50 mm.
What are the best field watches under 500? Under £500 in pounds, alphabetically: CWC G10 (£299), Marathon GPM (£450), Seiko SRPG41 (£320), Timex Field Post Solar (£160), Timex Field Post Titanium (£355), Timex Scout (£70) and, coming soon, the Vannin Field Watch (£399). In dollars the Marathon is $525, over the line. The two sections above list the dollar prices.
What are the best field watches under 200? Under £200 in pounds: Timex Field Post Solar at £160 and Timex Scout at £70. Under $200 in dollars: Bertucci A-2S at $145, Timex Scout at $95 and Vaer S3 at $189, with the Timex Solar at $209, just over. Bertucci and the Scout have a mineral crystal, Timex Solar and Vaer have sapphire, and none of the four is mechanical.
What are the best cheap field watches? The cheap and affordable field watches here are the four under £200 / $200: Bertucci, the Timex Scout, the Timex Field Post Solar and Vaer. A low price does not mean a thin specification, because sapphire appears at £160, $189 and $209. What it does not include here is a mechanical movement, and the Timex Scout is rated 50 m against 100 m for the other three.
What are the best field watches under 1000? Everything in this guide fits under £1,000 / $1,000 in its own currency. The top band holds the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto (£640 / $795, H-10), the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical (£545 / $675, hand-wound H-50) and the Nodus Sector II Field Titanium ($600 to $625, NH38). Marathon's GPM is $525 in dollars. Sold-out, pre-order and euro-only watches are not listed.
Which field watch brands are worth a look? In alphabetical order, not a ranking: Bertucci, Citizen, CWC, Hamilton, Marathon, Nodus, Seiko, Timex and Vaer. Each had at least one field-style model available from its own site on 24 October 2026, though Citizen describes its model as military-inspired. Vannin is included and disclosed. The list is not complete: makers we could not check are not rejected.
What makes a durable field watch? We have not tested these watches, so we call none more durable. Published specifications worth checking are the crystal (eight list sapphire, five do not), the water-resistance rating, and the case material: stainless steel for several, titanium for the Timex Field Post Titanium and the Nodus, and a composite fibreshell for Marathon. A rating is not a depth, and price does not predict any of these here.
What are the best automatic field watches? The six automatics here, alphabetically with Vannin last: Hamilton Khaki Field Auto (H-10), Marathon GPM (Seiko NH35A), Nodus Sector II (NH38), Seiko SRPG41 (4R36), Timex Field Post Titanium (Miyota 8215) and the Vannin Field Watch (Miyota 9039, coming soon). Hamilton's Khaki Field Mechanical (H-50) is hand-wound, not automatic. Automatics under £500 / $500 have their own guide.
For automatics under £500 / $500 see best automatic watches under £500 (and $500), and for the trade-offs with quartz see automatic vs quartz watches.
The Vannin Field Watch is coming soon, with four colourways at £399. If a 38 mm automatic with a 46.0 mm lug-to-lug sounds right, you can register your interest on the Field Watch page. If a price or specification here has changed, tell us and we will check it.
Prices and specifications last checked 24 October 2026. Tell us if something has changed.
